Mumbai-Gandhinagar Vande Bharat train to get 20 coaches, annual capacity to reach 2.69 lakh passengers

With a spanking new 20-coach Vande Bharat train to be inducted instead of the existing 16-coach one on the Mumbai–Gandhinagar Capital section, the additional four coaches will lead to the addition of 2.69 lakh passengers per year on the route.

"Once introduced, the 20-coach train will benefit more passengers on this already well-patronised Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Vande Bharat route," Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek said.


Assessing its response of 150 per cent capacity utilisation, the Railway Board has approved a longer train for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad route.



It was the country’s third Vande Bharat when introduced in September 2022. This train is operated by Western Railway, connecting Mumbai Central, Borivali, Vapi, Surat, Vadodara Jn, Anand Jn, Ahmedabad Jn, and Gandhinagar Capital. It is currently operated with train numbers 20901/20902 on a six-days-a-week basis.

Existing Vande Bharat Capacity (16 coaches):

2 EC coaches (52 each) – 104 seats

14 AC Chair Car coaches:

(C1 and C14) (44 each) – 88 seats

(C2 to C13) (78 each) – 936 seats

Total Seats: 104 (EC) + 1,024 (AC Chair Car) = 1,128 seats

New Vande Bharat Capacity (20 coaches):

2 EC coaches (52 each) – 104 seats

18 AC Chair Car coaches:

(C1 and C18) (44 each) – 88 seats

(C2 to C17) (78 each) – 1,248 seats

Total Seats: 104 (EC) + 1,336 (AC Chair Car) = 1,440 seats

Total increase after addition of 4 coaches: 312 seats

Existing capacity utilisation: 150 per cent

Daily extra capacity generated: 468

Up and Down trips: 936

6 days a week: 5,616

In a month: 22,464

In a year: 269,568
