The Sakinaka police have arrested a man and his son for allegedly assaulting a sub-inspector on duty in the area on Tuesday night. Drish Sharma, 19, who was riding his illegally modified bike without a helmet and honking excessively, was stopped by Police Sub-Inspector Prakash Wakhare, 35, who was patrolling the MHADA Colony area in Andheri to check if Navratri mandals had stopped playing loud music.
While there, PSI Wakhare spotted Drish riding a motorcycle on Sinhgad College Road without a helmet and with a loud modified silencer. Wakhare stopped him and asked for his age and driving licence. Drish replied rudely, questioning Wakhare as to why he should furnish his licence or reveal his age. He also threatened Wakhare, saying his uncle was a senior police officer and that he would have him suspended.
An argument ensued, after which Drish called someone and handed the phone to PSI Wakhare. The caller introduced himself as Police Inspector Sonawane. Wakhare greeted him with ‘Jai Hind’ and explained the incident, after which the person on the phone allegedly said, “You take whatever action you want. I’ll reach there in ten minutes and then see what happens to you,” before disconnecting the call.
Soon after, Drish’s mother and grandmother arrived at the spot. At this point, Drish began abusing Wakhare and grabbed his uniform collar, which resulted in a scuffle. As Drish’s mother pulled him aside, his father, Pawan Sharma, reached the scene. Amid the chaos, Pawan punched Wakhare two to three times on his face and hit him in the stomach, attempting to knock him down. The tussle caused Wakhare to feel dizzy, while the buttons on his uniform broke off.
Following the incident, police and locals detained the father and son and brought them to the Sakinaka police station. They have been booked under the Motor Vehicles Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is underway.
