The Western Railway (WR) on Wednesday said they were turning the tables on commuters with a humble namaste, launching a strike against ticketless passengers.  This development comes amid the rise in incidents of unruly behaviour of commuters with railway ticket-checking staffers.

The WR said that it has swooped in an army of 300 ticket collectors (TC) and 50 police personnel, armed with body cams and speakers. The drive, aptly titled Namaste Abhiyan, was conducted at Borivli station on Wednesday.

“On Wednesday, 300 ticket checkers with 50 police personnel, including 30 RPF and 20 GRP staff, descended at Borivli station in the evening, and checks with 5192 cases yielded a sum of '13.5 lakh,” WR Chief PRO Vineet Abhishek said.

Why Namaste Abhiyan?

Namaste Abhiyan is an innovative and people-focused campaign to redefine the public image and operational strength of the Ticket Checking Force.  The campaign’s motto states: “Not just five fingers in a fist, but ten fingers in a Namaste — powerful, purposeful, and dignified.”

This campaign aims to instill a dignified, efficient, and technology-backed ticket-checking culture that ensures zero tolerance for ticketless travel while maintaining the highest standards of passenger interaction and discipline. Railways have been witnessing increasing cases of unruly ticketless passengers.
