A full emergency was declared by the authorities at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Friday afternoon, putting on hold all departures from the airport following an emergency landing by a SpiceJet flight, as per the Airport Operation Control Centre (AOCC).

According to officials, the wheel of a SpiceJet Q400 (SG2906) plane with 75 people onboard fell off after take-off from Kandla airport on Friday.

The aircraft which took off at 2.38 pm from Kandla continued its journey to Mumbai, where it made a safe landing at 3.51 pm. Due to the damaged landing gear, the flight had to dump fuel before landing to manage weight and ensure the landing was smooth.

Fuel is usually dumped from aircraft in such cases to avoid putting extra weight on hydraulics, making them potentially break, and to avoid any fire incidents in case the aircraft’s wings get damaged.

A spokesperson from SpiceJet said in a statement, “On September 12, an outer wheel of a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Kandla to Mumbai was found at the runway after take-off. The aircraft continued its journey to Mumbai and landed safely. Following a smooth landing, the aircraft taxied to the terminal under its own power, and all passengers disembarked normally.”

The Mumbai airport, which had declared a full emergency as a precaution, saw a 15-to-20-minute halt in operations due to the incident and the potential danger of the landing gear catching fire, sources said.

A CSMIA spokesperson said in a statement, “An aircraft from Kandla made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 3.51 pm on September 12, 2025 after reporting a technical issue. A full emergency was declared as a precaution. The aircraft landed safely on Runway 27, and all passengers and crew are safe. Normal operations resumed shortly after. Safety remains CSMIA’s top priority.”
