Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Opposition after the Constitution Amendment Bill to implement reservation for women in legislative bodies failed in the Lok Sabha. She described the incident as a “shameful day” for democracy. In a post on X, Pawar, who heads the Nationalist Congress Party, said the movement for women's reservation would not stop despite the setback. She added that "Nari Shakti will respond." — Sunetra Ajit Pawar (@SunetraA_Pawar) April 18, 2026 She accused opposition parties of deliberately blocking the bill and said this showed an “anti-women mindset.” According to her, those who speak about women’s empowerment have themselves harmed women’s rights by not supporting the proposal. She also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for consensus, saying that rejecting it was not just about political pride but also "an injustice to the women of the country." What the bill proposed The Constitution Amendment Bill sought to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies. It also proposed increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to a maximum of 850 to accommodate the quota after a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census. Similarly, state legislative assemblies and Union Territory assemblies were to see an increase in seats to ensure proper implementation of women’s reservation. The bill was intended to “operationalise” the women’s reservation law. Voting results in Lok Sabha The bill was debated and put to vote in the Lower House. -298 MPs voted in favour-230 MPs voted against-Total votes cast: 528-Required majority for passage: 352 votes (two-thirds majority) Despite securing a simple majority, the bill could not be passed due to the constitutional requirement for a special majority, reported PTI. Sunetra Pawar said the issue of women’s reservation is not over and insisted that the movement for women’s political representation will continue despite the setback. (With PTI Inputs)
18 April,2026 05:51 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Supreme Court has enhanced the monthly maintenance payable to a woman from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000, holding that a husband’s financial commitments, such as loan repayments for asset creation, cannot take precedence over his statutory obligation to maintain his spouse. A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and AG Masih passed the order while allowing an appeal filed by Deepa Joshi against her estranged husband, Gaurav Joshi, challenging the adequacy of maintenance fixed by courts below. The apex court modified a June 26, 2025, order of the Uttarakhand High Court, which had earlier enhanced the maintenance from Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 per month. In its order, the Justice Karol-led Bench noted that the husband, employed as a Manager with Canara Bank, was drawing a gross monthly income of Rs 1,15,670 and had a regular source of earnings. It also recorded that the wife has no independent source of income and has been living separately shortly after the marriage. “Repayments of loans, particularly where such repayments result in creation or acquisition of assets, partake the character of capital investment and cannot be equated with essential or unavoidable expenditure,” the top court observed. It added that such financial commitments, being voluntary in nature, “cannot be accorded precedence over the statutory and legally enforceable obligation of maintenance”. The Justice Karol-led Bench said that while determining maintenance, a balance must be struck between the financial capacity of the husband and the reasonable needs of the wife. “The obligation of the husband to maintain his spouse is a primary and continuing duty, which must be discharged in a manner that enables the wife to live with dignity,” the apex court said. Referring to settled legal principles, the Supreme Court reiterated that maintenance should not be illusory and must be fair, reasonable, and commensurate with the status of the parties. The Justice Karol-led Bench found that the courts below had placed considerable reliance on deductions from the husband’s salary, including loan repayments, which had the effect of reducing the maintenance amount. However, it held that such deductions could not substantially dilute the husband’s liability, especially when they contributed to asset creation. “We are of the opinion that a sum of Rs 25,000 per month would be just, fair and reasonable in the facts of the present case,” the Justice Karol-led Bench said. Accordingly, the Supreme Court enhanced the maintenance to Rs 25,000 per month, payable from the date of the original application. It directed that arrears, if any, be cleared within three months and that the monthly maintenance be paid on or before the 7th day of each calendar month. The proceedings arose from a maintenance plea filed by the wife under Section 144 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, after she alleged neglect and harassment and claimed she had no means to sustain herself. The Family Court had initially granted Rs 8,000 per month, which was later enhanced by the Uttarakhand High Court before the matter reached the apex court. 18 April,2026 04:17 PM IST | Nashik | mid-day online correspondentAfter a crocodile was spotted on a road in Chamraud village late Friday night, a Forest Department team captured the reptile after a two-hour operation and released it into the Ganga, an official said on Saturday. The Forest Department's Range Officer of Hastinapur, Khushboo Upadhyay, said the team received information around midnight and rushed to the spot. By the time they arrived, the animal had hidden in nearby bushes, making the operation challenging. The team cleared the bushes and carried out the rescue cautiously, as the reptile was large and aggressive. After about two hours, it was successfully captured and released into the Ganga, she said. The crocodile, identified as a mugger (Crocodylus palustris), measured about 2.25 metres in length and weighed around 150 kg, she added. Upadhyay said crocodiles are typically found in rivers, ponds and marshy areas and may turn aggressive if they feel threatened This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 18 April,2026 04:16 PM IST | Meerut (UP) | PTIUnion Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday termed the failure of the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha a "big blow to the country," while holding the Congress-led INDIA Bloc responsible for blocking the legislation linked to women's reservation and delimitation. Addressing the media after the conclusion of the Budget Session, Rijiju said the government had made sustained efforts to build consensus but could not secure the constitutionally required two-thirds majority for the Constitution Amendment Bill. "We have the majority, but we didn't get the two-thirds majority required for the Constitution Amendment, so this bill couldn't be passed," he said, while asserting that all other government business during the session was completed successfully. Focusing on the delimitation aspect, Rijiju defended the Centre's move to link women's reservation with the redrawing of constituencies, calling it a necessary constitutional and democratic exercise. "This is not a failure of the government. This is a big blow to the country by the Congress party and some other parties," he said, adding that the inability to pass the bill has delayed a crucial reform aimed at ensuring equitable representation. Explaining the need for delimitation, he said disparities in constituency sizes must be addressed in a democratic system. "If one constituency has 40 lakh voters and another has 60,000, it is our responsibility to correct this imbalance. The population has grown significantly, and representation must be adjusted accordingly," Rijiju said, noting that the constitutional freeze on delimitation until 2026 necessitates an amendment process. Rijiju also rejected opposition claims that the government was attempting to delay women's reservation. He said the linkage between reservation, census, and delimitation was already part of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam passed earlier. "They know why delimitation is necessary, but they are pretending otherwise to derail women's reservation," he alleged. Rijiju further accused the Congress of politically obstructing the bill, claiming that it avoided meaningful consultation. He said, "We are all saddened by the fact that, driven by political motives and a mindset of denying women rights, the Congress Party and the opposition, with a blatant majority, prevented the passage of the Constitutional Amendment. We are saddened because this loss has been inflicted on the women of the country. This crucial step, which was to give women a say in the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assemblies, to empower them to participate in the entire legal process, in the decisions that govern the country, and in the decision-making process, failed to pass. That's why we are saddened. This should not be considered a failure of the government or our party." The minister also claimed that the government had engaged in extensive consultations with political parties, but Congress leaders avoided discussions. He alleged that despite repeated invitations, Congress preferred "writing letters instead of attending meetings." The bill had secured 298 votes in favour and 230 against, falling short of the required special majority. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla confirmed its defeat, after which the government decided to keep related bills in abeyance. Rijiju maintained that the Centre remains committed to women's empowerment and will continue efforts to implement reservation, asserting that "the Congress Party and some of their allies will have to face the wrath of women. The Congress party also bears a dark stain of anti-women, a stigma that will never go away. Celebrating the denial of women's rights is a grave sin. They consider it a victory by deciding not to grant women rights. Women's reservation in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies is our responsibility, and we must provide it. Congress's mentality is to deny it, and they are celebrating after defeating that bill. They have completely exposed their true nature. No excuses will work. Congress and its allies have destroyed the rights that should be given to women." This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 18 April,2026 03:29 PM IST | New Delhi | ANICongress MP KC Venugopal said that the Opposition remains firm in its support for women's reservation on Saturday while accusing the government of attempting to link the issue with delimitation during discussions on the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. Explaining the Opposition's stand, Venugopal said the core objection was to what he described as an attempt to mix two separate issues. He said, "Their agenda to link delimitation with women's reservation failed yesterday. Women's reservation never failed. Their agenda to link delimitation with women's reservation failed." He further alleged that the government's intent behind delimitation was selective and politically driven. Venugopal said, "Because they want to do a delimitation according to their convenience, like Assam and Jammu-Kashmir, they want to cut short the entire constituency according to their convenience. That has failed." Venugopal argued that any major constitutional promise should be backed by a formal legislative commitment. Raising questions on the "50 per cent formula" being discussed, the leader said, "Where was the guarantee given? If the guarantee was there, they could have come with an official amendment of the government. Why not that?" Venugopal also reiterated the Opposition's demand on implementation, saying, "We demand to implement Women Reservation with the existing 543 strength." He maintained that the Opposition's position was not against women's reservation, but against what he called procedural and structural linking of the Bill with delimitation and other related issues. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot also alleged the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, calling it a "political move" and a "well-thought-out conspiracy" by the government. Speaking to ANI, Gehlot explained that it was a political move by the government, "In my view, it was a political move by Mr Modi and Mr Amit Shah, which shouldn't have happened. They misled the whole country and created such conditions that this amendment wouldn't pass in this Parliament, so they could then blame the opposition." He added that discussions should have been held with state leadership as well, saying, "If they had started this process and then called the Chief Ministers of the southern states and West Bengal... Prime Minister Modi should have spoken to them directly and convinced them. They should have called an all-party meeting for an open discussion." Criticising the urgency around the Bill, he said, "What was the rush for 10, 12, or 15 days that you couldn't even wait? You could have called the meeting after the 29th." Gehlot also alleged political intent behind the process, saying, "They created these conditions themselves so it wouldn't pass and they could blame the opposition and the Congress Party. People understand this, and it won't make a difference. People know their tactics." On the same matter, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas strongly criticised the Centre, alleging that the government was attempting to mislead the country on women's reservation. Reacting to the developments in Parliament, Brittas said the opposition unity ensured that the government's attempt to push its agenda did not succeed. He said, "The dubious, diabolical game of the Modi government has fallen flat on the floor of the parliament." Alleging that the government had no substantive plan for women's empowerment, he further said, "The country has realised that this government has nothing substantive to give to the women, but only 'jumla', tricks, and the parliament has exposed this." Brittas also claimed that the outcome of the proceedings reflected growing resistance to the government's approach, adding, "Here starts the downfall of the Modi government, and the way in which they attempted to divide the opposition also didn't succeed." The remarks come after the BJP-led government failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill, which was linked to implementing women's reservation through delimitation. In the voting held after a marathon debate, 298 members supported the bill while 230 opposed it, leading to its defeat. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 18 April,2026 03:11 PM IST | New Delhi | ANIPrime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the nation tonight at 8:30 PM. It is likely that the Prime Minister will speak on the issue of the Women's reservation bill which failed to pass in Parliament after the opposition blocked it.Earlier former Union Minister Smriti Irani lambasted the Congress and other INDIA bloc allies for failing to unite behind the move to give 33% reservation to women in Parliament.Smriti Irani said, "The women of the country were told that the Congress party has created a dream that holds the intention of securing political rights for women. What has become of that intention after 98 years was seen yesterday by women across the country in the nation's Parliament. The Congress party smiled, thumped desks, and celebrated politically yesterday as they crushed the aspirations of the nation's political awakening. But for the BJP, this is not just a struggle for power; it is a fight for the right to equality. Women will remember that during six decades of Congress rule, 11 crore women in this country were deprived of access to toilets. Women will remember that 25 crore women were denied the support to open bank accounts. Women will remember that under BJP-NDA, the first gender budget framework was introduced."The BJP leader said that the Congress' real face was now exposed before the women of the country."Congress and its supporting parties celebrated the fact that the struggling political women of this country, who have been working for years and were merely demanding 33% rights. They were immersed in the celebration of how to deny those women their rights by breaking their dignity, and how to win the battle in Parliament. Today, in the Congress press conference, a jibe was made that some people in the BJP tried to play the messiah. I'm stunned that in the Congress press conference, it was stated that they support the bill passed in 2023, which mentions delimitation. But look at Congress's hypocrisy--they also say together that they don't have faith in the committee and the arrangement for delimitation. Congress has no faith in the country's constitutional arrangement, in Parliament, or in the women of the country. Congress has exposed its cruel face in front of the women of the country," she said.On Friday, the BJP-led government failed to secure the required two-thirds majority to pass the amendment bill. In the Lok Sabha voting, 298 members supported the bill while 230 opposed it.Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla confirmed that the bill did not pass. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Centre would not proceed with the remaining interlinked legislations. While Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the opposition of blocking women's reservation, opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, maintained that they support the quota but oppose its linkage with delimitation."Yesterday in Parliament, they came up with a new Bill. They said it was a Women's Bill, but that was already passed in 2023. The hidden agenda behind that Bill was delimitation. The idea was to reduce Tamil Nadu's representation in the Parliament of India and weaken southern and smaller states. We defeated that Bill in Parliament yesterday," he said during a campaign rally in Ponneri, Tamil Nadu.Outlining his broader political position, he said India is a "union of states" where each state must have equal space. "Every state should have a voice in the Union and should be free to express its language and protect its tradition."Meanwhile, the BJP and its allies are continuing their street protest against the Congress and the INDIA bloc alleging that the alliance was anti-women and did not want to see the women of the country go forward.
