Indian fishermen who returned to the country from Iran have praised the Indian Embassy and the government for their assistance in facilitating their safe evacuation amid the tense regional situation. Fisherman Rajesh Patel from Gujarat's Valsad, who had been working as a fisherman in the Kiru region of Iran for the past four years, said he and others were forced to leave due to escalating unrest. He stated that the situation there was "quite chaotic", noting the role of the Indian embassy in Tehran in assisting the stranded fishermen to get them back home safely. "I came back from the Kiru region of Iran. I work as a fisherman. I had been there for four years," Patel said. "Things got quite chaotic over there recently. That's why we had to leave. The Indian Embassy provided us with a great deal of assistance in getting out. It would have been extremely difficult for us to leave on our own, but the entire Indian Embassy machinery set up support centres everywhere, in every state, so we were able to get out and return safely. The Indian government helped us in Iran from Armenia to get us back home in India," he added. Another fisherman from the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu described the difficult conditions they faced before their return, saying they were caught in a life-threatening situation. "Per day, nearly 10 to 20 bombs fell before us. With great difficulty, holding our lives in our hands, we came here safely. We thank our government very much," he said. The returning fishermen expressed gratitude to the Indian authorities for coordinating their evacuation and ensuring their safe return to India amid the crisis. The fishermen returned to the country on Saturday night and were welcomed by Union Minister for Commerce Piyush Goyal at the Chennai International Airport. Speaking to reporters at the airport following their arrival, Goyal said the evacuation was carried out following directions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with coordinated efforts by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Indian missions abroad to relocate the stranded fishermen from Iran to Armenia before bringing them back to India. "Our Prime Minister gave instructions to the Foreign Ministry, and they worked very hard to move them from Iran to Armenia. From Armenia, we got some good people to support us in getting them back because they are very poor fishermen. In the first batch, 345 came. Today, 300+ came. The Prime Minister has always cared for all the people who are stuck in any crisis. This once again demonstrates how much he cares for our fishermen who were unfortunately stuck in the middle of the war in Iran. They have been brought out from right inside Iran," the Union Minister said. He further informed that over 600 Indian fishermen have been safely brought back from Iran so far, with the assistance of Indian embassies in Iran and Armenia. The returnees include fishermen primarily from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Kerala and Puducherry. Earlier on Friday, during the inter-ministerial briefing on the recent developments in West Asia, the MEA stated that the Embassy of India in Tehran has facilitated the movement of 2,180 Indian nationals from Iran to Armenia and Azerbaijan for onwards travel to India, including 981 Indian students and 657 Indian fishermen. 13 April,2026 02:44 AM IST | Chennai (Tamil Nadu) | ANILeader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday flagged off the 'Run for Ambedkar & Run for Constitution - Marathon 2026' in the national capital. Speaking on the occasion, he alleged that those aligned with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ideologies seek to undermine BR Ambedkar and the Constitution, while asserting that Ambedkar's core message centred on equality for all citizens. "Ambedkar's main message was about the Constitution. Today, those with RSS and BJP ideologies want to destroy Ambedkar and the Constitution... They don't want everyone in India to be equal. Whatever they do, even folding hands in front of Ambedkar's statue is an attempt to destroy the Constitution," he said. Further, Rajasthan Assembly Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, who was also present at the occasion, alleged that the Constitution is under sustained attack, claiming that independent agencies are being misused and the Election Commission of India is functioning at the behest of the government. "Continuous attacks are being made on the Constitution, a conspiracy is underway to weaken the Constitution, independent agencies are being misused, and the Election Commission is working at the government's behest. This is a direct violation of the Constitution... Voting is to be held in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, you want to pass the Women's Reservation Bill during the elections while the code of conduct is in place," Jully said. Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin also stressed the need to safeguard the Constitution, warning against attempts to distort it. He also said this Marathon sends a strong message in honour of BR Ambedkar, while encouraging youth to engage with the country's history and constitutional values. "... We must keep the Constitution alive. Though some try to distort it, today we send a strong message in honour of Dr Ambedkar, who gave us a framework that has sustained India for over seventy-eight years of independence. Without the Constitution, the country cannot function, and once written with such wisdom, it should not be changed. This marathon is a good initiative to raise awareness, especially among the youth, encouraging them to study history and the Constitution," Azharuddin told ANI. Singh said the GRP has registered a case under Section 143(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the eight accused, all of whom are from different districts of Bihar. Probe suggests trafficking for labour Initial investigations suggest that the boys were being taken to Latur to work as labourers, Singh said, adding that further investigation is underway. The children were travelling in sleeper class coaches, with around 50 of them packed into a single compartment, he said. 12 April,2026 06:53 PM IST | Ranchi | mid-day online correspondentIndia on Sunday firmly rejected China’s attempt to assign new names to locations within its territory, calling the move “mischievous” and reiterating that Arunachal Pradesh remains an integral and inalienable part of the country, reported news agency IANS. Responding to media queries, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that such actions by China are based on false claims and do not change the ground reality. He emphasised that India categorically rejects any attempt to manufacture narratives regarding its sovereign territory, reported IANS. India Urges China to Avoid Actions That Harm Bilateral Ties Jaiswal also urged China to refrain from steps that could negatively impact relations between the two countries. He noted that such actions undermine ongoing efforts to stabilise and normalise ties between India and China, reported IANS. According to the MEA, attempts to rename places not only distort facts but also create unnecessary friction at a time when both sides are working towards improving mutual understanding. Repeated Attempts by China Draw Strong Response This is not the first instance of China attempting to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh. Similar actions were taken previously, including the release of a list of names by Chinese authorities last year for locations in the region, which Beijing refers to as “Zangnan.” India had strongly objected to those moves as well, describing them as “vain and preposterous,” and reiterating its consistent stance on the issue, reported IANS. ‘Creative Naming’ Cannot Alter Ground Reality The MEA stressed that such “creative naming” exercises have no bearing on sovereignty or territorial integrity. India maintained that Arunachal Pradesh was, is, and will always remain an integral part of the nation, regardless of external claims, reported IANS. Officials highlighted that repeated assertions from China do not change internationally recognised realities and called for responsible conduct to maintain stability in bilateral relations, reported IANS. Firm Stand Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Sensitivities India’s latest response underscores its firm position on territorial integrity amid continuing sensitivities in India-China relations. While both sides have engaged in dialogue to address broader issues, such developments risk complicating diplomatic progress, reported IANS. The government reiterated that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity remains the cornerstone of any meaningful engagement between the two countries. (With inputs from IANS)

12 April,2026 04:11 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentAs the first phase of the nationwide Census 2027 has already commenced across the country from April 1, the house listing exercise in Chhattisgarh is scheduled to begin on May 1. Preparations for this massive exercise are in full swing in the state. The first phase, known as the House Listing and Housing Census, is a crucial component of the overall census process. In Chhattisgarh, house listing and enumeration of houses will be carried out from May 1 to May 30. In line with the 'Digital India' initiative, citizens will also have the option of 'Self-Enumeration' this time. From April 16 to April 30, families can voluntarily submit information about their households through a dedicated online portal. Those opting for self-enumeration will receive a unique Self-Enumeration ID, which they must preserve and provide to census enumerators during their visit for verification. The first phase will record several key details, including the number, status, and type of each building and house; its usage (residential, commercial, or other); the nature of construction (kachcha, pakka, or semi-pakka); the number of households; and availability of basic amenities such as drinking water, toilet facilities, electricity, cooking fuel, and internet connectivity. The entire process will be monitored through the Census Management and Monitoring System. All information collected will remain strictly confidential and will not be disclosed, even under the RTI Act. This will be India’s 16th national census overall and the eighth since Independence. The last census was conducted in 2011, while the one due in 2021 could not be held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
