Air India goes greener, adopts smart tech to cut emissions and save fuel

Air India, on September 12, announced that it has started using two advanced digital tools, SITA OptiFlight and SITA eWAS, to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across its fleet.

SITA OptiFlight, especially its OptiClimb module, gives pilots data-driven climb-out schedules that help reduce fuel use during take-off, one of the most fuel-intensive parts of a flight.

SITA eWAS provides real-time weather updates and forecasts, helping pilots avoid turbulence, reroute more effectively, and make smarter decisions during flights.

According to an official statement, the smart tools are already in use on the Air India Airbus A320 and Air India Express Boeing 737 aircraft, which operate on both domestic and international routes. The system will also be added to Air India’s widebody fleet in the near future.

It said that the move is expected to save about 11,100 tonnes of fuel and reduce carbon emissions by 35,000 tonnes every year.

Sumesh Patel, President of SITA (Asia Pacific), said, "As rules and pressure around environmental protection increase, the need for smarter solutions is urgent. Tools like SITA OptiFlight and eWAS help cut emissions and save fuel while also improving flight performance."

This step is part of the airline group’s bigger plan to modernise its operations and become more environmentally friendly, the statement said.

Basil Kwauk, Chief Operations Officer of Air India, said, "Sustainability and efficiency are key to our journey of becoming a world-class airline. These tools help us modernise our operations and reduce our carbon footprint."

The Air India Group includes full-service airline Air India and low-cost carrier Air India Express. The group was taken over by Tata Sons in 2022 and is currently undergoing a five-year transformation plan called Vihaan.AI. The group now operates more than 300 aircraft, serves 55 domestic and 45 international destinations.
