Latur police have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against history-sheeter Ajinkya Nilkanth Mule and his gang, a senior official said on Monday.
The case stems from a violent incident on March 11, when Mule and his associates allegedly assaulted a man named Ajay Babasaheb Chinchole at a bar on Ambajogai Road. According to police, the group had consumed alcohol at the establishment and attacked Chinchole with a knife, iron cutter, rod, and beer bottle after he refused to pay their bill, according to the news agency PTI.
“Chinchole was stripped and paraded on the road. The accused also stole Rs 2,200 from him,” the official said. A case was registered the following day under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. Mule and his associates were subsequently arrested.
The investigation revealed a long criminal record for Mule, who is facing 25 cases, including armed robbery, preparation for dacoity, extortion, and unlawful assembly with deadly weapons.
After seeking approval from the Additional Director General of Police, Nanded Range, Latur police invoked MCOCA against Mule and his gang, the official confirmed, as per the news agency PTI.
A 2,403-page charge sheet has been filed before the special MCOCA court in Latur, under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe, the official added.

NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Monday directed a swift, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the incidents reported from Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, where a media story claimed that a "nude gang" emerged from fields to attack women.
She also asked authorities to step up police patrolling in the affected areas to ensure women's safety.
In a letter to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police, Rahatkar sought immediate identification and arrest of the accused and strict action under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The DGP has been asked to submit a detailed report to the commission within three days.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) said it considers such incidents a grave assault on the dignity and security of women, stressing that the state administration must take concrete and urgent measures to safeguard communities.
