The newly built Bandra East skywalk was opened for the public on Monday, with officials stating that it would improve safety and convenience for pedestrians travelling in one of Mumbai’s busiest areas.

The skywalk has been constructed for the benefit of those moving between the railway station, Bandra Court, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), MHADA office, the district collector’s office, and nearby commercial areas.

While pedestrian ease is key in a traffic-choked city, people must take the skywalk rather than hunting for shortcuts through traffic snarls.

The skywalk must also stay clear to allow ease of movement. The new infrastructure must be monitored just so that it does not degenerate into fare in the air for hawkers. Just the announcement of this opening invited comments like this is one more space for hawkers. Authorities need to guard against this turning into a hawkers’ paradise.

The skywalk must be clean. Waste bins on or below exits and entrances are necessary.

Signboards about cleanliness will also subtly, maybe, reinforce the clean and clear message. Paan chewers, this is a skywalk, not a spitoon. There must be enough light on this infra so that it is safe, especially for women commuters. This edit space has highlighted numerous city spaces which need more light. Skywalks did figure in some of those dark and subsequently, dangerous spaces.

Several voices have claimed skywalks have been a failure, but one hopes this will be different. Lastly, the Bandra East station itself needs looking into. There is so much room for improvement that the skywalk is only one facet. A holistic overhaul is needed for the entire eastern precinct of
the station.
