Nearly after a decade in the NBA, Canadian forward Trey Lyles is heading to Europe. The 29-year-old has signed a one-year contract with Spanish basketball powerhouse Real Madrid, the club announced on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-9 forward appeared in 69 games for the Kings during the 2024–25 NBA season, averaging 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in just under 20 minutes per contest. Known for his versatility, Lyles also contributed as a small-ball center when needed. He shot 34.0 percent from beyond the arc last season and has long been valued as a reliable role player off the bench.
Despite his consistent production, Lyles generated limited interest in this summer’s free agency market, a somewhat surprising outcome given his track record. He was briefly linked to the Miami Heat earlier in the offseason, but the team re-signed guard Dru Smith, seemingly ending any further pursuit of Lyles.
Drafted 12th overall in 2015 after one collegiate season at Kentucky, Lyles has logged 650 regular-season appearances across 10 NBA seasons. He owns career averages of 7.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 44.1% from the field, 34.7 percent from three-point range, and 74.1 percent at the free-throw line. He has made 131 starts throughout his career.
Prior to his time in Sacramento, Lyles played for the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Detroit Pistons, spending at least two seasons each with Utah, Denver, and San Antonio. His brief stint with Detroit came during the 2021–22 campaign before he was traded to the Kings.
Now approaching his 30th birthday, Lyles is taking his talents overseas for the first time. He joins a Real Madrid squad that captured both the Liga ACB regular season and playoff titles last season. However, the team fell short in the EuroLeague playoffs, exiting in the quarterfinals.
Real Madrid’s current roster features several familiar names with NBA experience, including Chuma Okeke, Theo Maledon, and Mario Hezonja. With Lyles on board, the Spanish giants add a seasoned, stretch-capable forward who could prove instrumental in their pursuit of European glory.
