“We all were on election duty last week. I was on duty at Andheri, so we ran a marathon without practice. I just took a day’s rest on Saturday. It’s great that out team managed to win the Police Cup," said Pundlik Gavali

Mumbai Policemen’s team PC Men 14, comprising Dinkar Mahale, Pundlik Gavali and Abhijit Patil were very busy with their polling duties before and after the recent Mumbai Municipal Corporation election last week, but they didn’t let it affect their performance in Sunday’s Police Cup at the Tata Mumbai Marathon. The trio emerged winners with a combined timing of 3:50:06.
The Police Cup comprised 20 teams of three runners each (total of 60 participants).
“We all were on election duty last week. I was on duty at Andheri, so we ran a marathon without practice. I just took a day’s rest on Saturday. It’s great that out team managed to win the Police Cup.
Initially, I was lagging behind, but then I covered that distance later and completed the half marathon in one hour 10 minutes,” Mahale told mid-day on Sunday. The Police Cup-winning team will receive R90,000 as prize money.
“I was doing election bandobast [duty] in Vakola from January 14 till Friday, so there was absolutely no time for any practice. But Mahale, Patil, and myself were determined to run fast and do our best,” said Gavali, who clocked 1.18.32.
Meanwhile, Patil, who registered a timing of 1:20:00, said: “I was on election duty in Kandivli. I managed to do some running only on Saturday. We all are happy that we came first.”
