Actor Aamir Khan married Gauri Spratt on July 4 in an intimate civil ceremony in Mumbai. What made the wedding special was that it marked Aamir's third marriage. While many had criticised the marriage, now a fatwa has reportedly been issued against the actor, days after his wedding. Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, in a video, objected to Aamir's marriage to Gauri, stating that marriage to a non-Muslim is not permissible under Sharia.
According to ANI, the fatwa was issued on the grounds that Aamir's marriage to Gauri is against Sharia because she is a non-Muslim. Maulana Ibrahim Hussain stated that under his interpretation of Islamic law, a Muslim man is not permitted to marry a non-Muslim woman unless she embraces Islam.
A video of the Maulana talking about the same has surfaced online, in which he is seen criticising Aamir's marriage. "Muslim mard ke liye, iman walon ke liye, gair muslim se shaadi karna haraam hai," he said. He also alleged that Muslims who marry non-Muslim women are committing a sin and that such interfaith marriages are considered haraam. He went on to say that if such individuals do not acknowledge their actions as sinful, they will ultimately be answerable to Allah.
Maulana Ibrahim Hussain further added that marrying, divorcing, and then marrying multiple times is not justified. He said that if a person is not able to fulfil the responsibilities of a marriage, they must not marry another woman.
Referring to Aamir Khan, he said, "This question is about film actor Aamir Khan. He has recently entered into a third marriage with a non-Muslim woman. In connection with that, we have also seen protests taking place in society..."
For the unversed, Aamir Khan first married Reena Dutta on April 18, 1986. The couple had two children together, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. However, they parted ways in December 2002 after 16 years of marriage. Aamir then tied the knot with filmmaker Kiran Rao on December 28, 2005, after meeting her on the sets of Lagaan. They welcomed their son Azad Rao Khan via surrogacy in 2011.
Aamir and Kiran announced their separation in July 2021, sharing that they would continue to co-parent Azad and remain collaborators. On July 5, 2026, Aamir once again tied the knot with his longtime partner Gauri Spratt in an intimate registered ceremony under the Special Marriage Act.
