Since his debut with the 2001 film Aks, Abhimanyu Singh has made a name for himself not just in Hindi cinema but also in regional cinema. The actor effortlessly slipped into a dark and gritty character in his latest outing, Inspector Avinash 2. In an exclusive chat with mid-day, Abhimanyu opens up about his journey, working with star kids, Mom 2, and more.
Speaking about Inspector Avinash, Abhimanyu Singh expressed his happiness over the show's release, saying, "I'm really happy, and the wait is over because we shot this three years ago." He admitted that even he felt the project should have arrived sooner, adding, "Even I felt that it should have come sooner. But I feel it didn't make any difference." Singh also highlighted the importance of the promotional campaign this time around, noting, "We were fortunate that this time, publicity and PR were done. Last time, there was no PR, no publicity. And still, you know, it got attention."
Reflecting on his preparation and mindset during the shoot, the actor revealed that he largely kept to himself. "I wasn't socializing much during the shoot. And I used to see actors partying after pack-up. But I used to just look at them from afar," he said, explaining that he deliberately maintained a distance from others. "Because I wasn't mixing with them much. That's a very lonely process because, at that point in time, nobody can be with you," Singh added.
As the actor clocks 25 years in the industry, we asked him to pick some of his favourite characters, and he revealed, "Ransa from Gulaal and Bukka Reddy from Rakta Charitra."
Reflecting on his experience of working with both established stars and newcomers, Abhimanyu Singh said he never felt a difference on set.
The actor noted that despite the immense popularity and stature of some of the industry's biggest names, he never faced any difficulties while working with them in his early years. "The people who have been acting here for a long time, and whom people love so much, are stars, but I never had any problem working with any star in my initial days, to be honest," he said.
Singh further credited his senior colleagues for their encouragement and support throughout his journey. "As far as I can say, the people with whom I worked in my initial days, whether it was Hrithik or Salman, all of them supported me. I can't say that I faced any politics, or that someone said something bad about me or thought badly of me. Luckily, it didn't happen to me."
Reflecting on his experience of working on Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Abhimanyu Singh had high praise for director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, describing him as one of the finest filmmakers in the industry.
The actor was equally appreciative of his co-star Ranveer Singh, recalling their time together on the film fondly. "Ranveer is very fun-loving. I worked with him in Ram-Leela. He is a very happy-go-lucky kind of person. He is a good actor. He has a good accent. So, it was fun," he said.
Singh also expressed his happiness over Ranveer's achievements, adding, "And Dhurandhar did such a miracle. I was very happy. It was very important."
He spoke about the industry's current challenges and stated, "There is content and talent, but it should reach the right audience. I think that gap is a big reason why Bollywood is not doing well."
Speaking about a possible Mom 2, Abhimanyu Singh clarified, "I have no idea because I did Mom with Sridevi Ma'am, and it was my extreme good luck that I somehow ended up working with her. I have no idea about Mom 2."
