What happens when the ocean swallows you whole? The new trailer of Whalefall has the answer, and it is every bit as terrifying as it sounds. Austin Abrams finds himself trapped inside the belly of a massive sperm whale in the upcoming survival thriller, which is set to release exclusively in Indian theatres on October 16, 2026.

A deadly dive

Based on Daniel Kraus' acclaimed novel of the same name, Whalefall comes from 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment. The film also stars Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd.

The story follows Jay Gardiner, played by Abrams, who heads into the waters off California's Central Coast following the death of his father. He goes diving in search of his father's remains, but the mission takes an unimaginable turn when Jay is swallowed whole by a giant sperm whale.

Suddenly, Jay is battling more than grief. Trapped inside the enormous creature with only about an hour of oxygen left, he must find a way to survive and escape before time runs out.

The trailer promises a nerve-racking fight against the clock, with the film using its bizarre yet gripping premise to put its protagonist in one of cinema's most claustrophobic survival situations. As Jay fights for his life, he is also forced to confront his relationship with his late father, played by Brolin. The lessons he once learned from him could now become the only thing standing between Jay and death.

Behind the beast

Whalefall is directed, co-written and produced by Brian Duffield, who adapted Kraus' story for the big screen alongside the author. The filmmaker revealed that creating the film's unusual setting was no easy task, with much of the production taking place inside a giant whale set built on a soundstage.

"To bring Daniel Kraus' book to life, our cast and crew spent a summer inside a whale inside a sound stage in Studio City, California," Duffield said. He added that he was excited for audiences to experience the emotional and thrilling story on the big screen this October.

The film is produced by Brian Grazer, Duffield, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum, while Doug Merrifield, Richard Abate and Will Rowbotham serve as executive producers.

With a ticking clock, a giant whale and a man literally fighting for his next breath, Whalefall is diving headfirst into one wild survival story.
