RM has come under scrutiny following reports that he was allegedly seen smoking in restricted public areas during BTS' recent Japan visit for their Arirang world tour.
According to a report by Japanese outlet Shà «kan Bunshun, the controversy began after the idol was spotted in Tokyo's Shibuya district during a night out with acquaintances. The publication claimed RM was seen smoking in locations where it is strictly prohibited, including indoor hallways and public streets that enforce no-smoking rules. Japan has particularly stringent regulations around smoking, with designated zones clearly marked and violations often drawing public criticism.
The report further alleged that RM continued smoking despite being warned by a security guard. Witness accounts cited in the coverage claimed that he and his group remained in a venue for hours before stepping out, where the smoking allegedly continued. In some instances, he was also accused of discarding cigarette butts on the ground, which intensified backlash online, especially given Japan's strict cleanliness norms.
Photos published by the outlet reportedly show RM holding a cigarette, which quickly went viral across social media platforms. As the images circulated, netizens began criticising the singer for allegedly disregarding local laws and public etiquette. The issue escalated into a wider debate online, with some questioning celebrity responsibility when abroad.
However, it is important to note that these claims have not been independently verified. Neither RM nor his agency, HYBE, had issued an official statement at the time the reports gained traction, leaving room for speculation and divided reactions among fans.
While criticism mounted, a section of fans came to his defence, arguing that the situation may have been misrepresented or exaggerated by the media. Supporters pointed out that idols often face intense scrutiny overseas and urged others to wait for verified information before forming conclusions.
The controversy has once again highlighted how quickly incidents involving global stars can spiral into major discussions online especially when cultural norms and legal regulations differ across countries. Currently, the bangtan is on their world tour with their comeback album ARIRANG, fans have booked in large numbers for their concerts all around the world.
