As anticipation builds for the second season of Lock Upp, producer Ektaa Kapoor has finally addressed the question many fans have been asking: why isn't Kangana Ranaut returning as the host?
The reality show, which gained significant attention during its debut season, is set to return with a revamped format and a new hosting duo. This time, filmmaker Farah Khan and actor Riteish Deshmukh will take charge of the controversial prison-themed reality series, which is now being backed by Netflix.
Speaking at a recent media interaction ahead of the show's premiere, Ektaa clarified that Kangana's absence was not due to any disagreement or fallout. Instead, she explained that scheduling conflicts played a major role in the decision. According to the producer, Kangana is currently occupied with multiple professional commitments, making it difficult for her to dedicate the required time to the reality show.
Ektaa emphasized that Kangana remains an important part of the Lock Upp journey and credited her for helping establish the show's identity during its first season. She said the actress brought a distinct energy and fearless attitude that resonated with viewers and contributed significantly to the show's popularity.
However, with the new season taking a different creative direction and moving to a larger streaming platform, the makers felt it was the right time to introduce a fresh hosting combination. Ektaa expressed confidence in Farah and Riteish, describing them as entertainers who understand the pulse of reality television and can bring their own unique flavour to the format.
Farah Khan, known for her sharp wit and straightforward personality, is expected to oversee the contestants and their challenges, while Riteish Deshmukh will add his trademark humour and charm to the proceedings. The makers believe their contrasting styles will create an engaging dynamic for audiences.
Addressing comparisons between the old and new hosts, Ektaa maintained that every season evolves and that change is a natural part of keeping a reality show fresh. She also urged viewers to give the new team a chance before drawing conclusions.
Lock Upp is scheduled to premiere on June 27 and promises a mix of drama, confrontations, alliances and unexpected twists. With a fresh set of contestants and new hosts stepping into the spotlight, the upcoming season aims to build on the success of its predecessor while offering viewers a renewed entertainment experience.
While Kangana may not be returning this time, Ektaa's comments make it clear that the decision was driven by logistics rather than differences, leaving the door open for possible collaborations in the future.
