After a crashed SUV on Navi Mumbai's Palm Beach Road led to the recovery of suspected narcotics, a revolver and chemical substances, the NRI Coastal Police on Sunday arrested Rohit Rawat in connection with the case.

According to police sources, Rawat was allegedly a long-time associate of the main accused in the case. Officials, however, have not disclosed further details regarding his exact role in the alleged transportation and possession of the seized materials.

The case came to light after a white MG Hector SUV with a Rajasthan registration number allegedly rammed into a divider near Akshar Signal in Seawoods during the early hours of Friday.

Traffic police personnel on night patrol reached the accident spot around 4.30 am and found the vehicle abandoned.

The occupant of the SUV, identified as Ganpat Ram, had allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

Drugs and revolver recovered from vehicle

During the subsequent search of the damaged vehicle, police allegedly recovered 10 to 15 kilograms of suspected opium, a revolver with six live cartridges, and nearly 20 to 25 kilograms of suspicious chemical substances packed inside bags.

The shocking recovery transformed what initially appeared to be a routine road accident into a major crime investigation involving suspected narcotics trafficking and illegal possession of arms.

Visuals from the scene showed the badly damaged SUV, police personnel securing the area, and the alleged firearm recovered from inside the vehicle.

Police probe wider network

Police sources said investigators are now probing the wider network linked to the accused and trying to establish where the consignment originated and its intended destination.

However, officials said many crucial details are still unclear as the main accused remains at large.

Further investigation is underway.
