A 19-YEAR-old college student was taken into custody after his speeding Hyundai Creta rammed into pedestrians on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) near Mahatma Phule Nagar, Powai, on the evening of May 3. Police said the vehicle was moving at high speed when the driver lost control and knocked down people on the roadside. There were two other occupants in the car at the time of the incident.
According to officials, the driver swerved after a woman suddenly came in front of the vehicle, and in the process, hit three pedestrians crossing the road. He allegedly struck a motorcycle before crashing into the victims.
Fearing backlash from bystanders, the driver fled the spot but later surrendered at a police chowki in the Parksite area of Vikhroli.
The injured were rushed to the hospital and are currently undergoing treatment. All are out of danger, police confirmed.
Senior PI Jitendra Sonawane, Powai police, said, "The car driver is a student. We have taken him into custody. The accused driver hit pedestrians with his car, and all injured persons were admitted to the hospital. We have conducted a blood test and are awaiting the report to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol. The process of registering an FIR is underway."
Police identified the accused as Vishal Deep Sindhu, a resident of Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
Preliminary findings suggest no alcohol consumption, though the final report is awaited. The accused has been remanded to police custody for two days.
This is the second accident case reported in Powai in recent days. Earlier, a speeding tempo knocked down three sewer workers on JVLR, leaving them seriously injured. The driver had fled, prompting a police manhunt.
