Outrage and sharp divisions erupted on social media following Monday morning's fatal Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus accident near Plaza Cinema in Dadar West, which left a youth dead and three others injured. As videos of the bus losing control and colliding with multiple vehicles circulated online, residents voiced concerns over recurring BEST-related incidents, driver training, route safety, and congestion at the junction.

Several users called for strict action, with one writing "BAN BEST BUSES," reflecting widespread anger over the incident.

Others pointed to alleged systemic issues in public transport operations and enforcement. One user, posting under the handle antoniocnpereira, tagged the chief minister's office while alleging the absence of speed regulation mechanisms and live monitoring systems in buses.

However, not all reactions blamed the driver. Some users defended him, citing heavy congestion and illegal parking at the junction. A widely circulated comment by user dharmesh.karmokar argued that public transport vehicles are often obstructed by improperly parked taxis and vehicles in no-parking zones, and criticised pedestrian movement on carriageways despite available footpaths.

The incident has also revived long-standing concerns about the Plaza Cinema junction, which commuters have previously flagged as accident-prone due to congestion, diversions, and ongoing infrastructure work. Users described the stretch as narrow and chaotic, particularly during peak hours.

Calls for speed limiters in buses, improved driver training, stricter monitoring, and better enforcement of traffic rules dominated online discussions. Several users also expressed fear over daily commuting safety in Mumbai, with some drawing comparisons to previous public transport accidents in the city and elsewhere.
