A mild tremor of magnitude 3.6 struck Maharashtra's Palghar district late Saturday night, with officials reporting no casualties or damage to houses.
The tremor was recorded at 10.33 pm, with its epicentre located at a depth of 5 kilometres in the Talasari area, officials said on Sunday.
According to officials, the seismic activity was of low intensity and was felt in parts of the district.
"There is no case of any injury or damage to houses," district Disaster Management Cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said.
The authorities began monitoring the situation after the tremor was reported. Officials said there were no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries.
The district administration and local authorities are keeping a watch on the situation and assessing whether any further tremors are reported in the area.
Officials have also advised residents to remain calm and follow basic safety measures in case of any subsequent seismic activity.
Palghar, a coastal district in Maharashtra, has experienced low-intensity tremors at various times over the years. The region has been monitored by authorities because of recurring seismic activity in parts of the district.
The latest tremor did not result in any reported casualties or damage to residential structures, officials said.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the area and are expected to respond if further seismic activity is detected.
Residents have been advised to remain alert without causing panic and to follow standard safety protocols during an earthquake or tremor. Officials said any significant development would be communicated through the appropriate channels.
The tremor comes as Palghar continues to remain under routine monitoring for seismic activity, with authorities maintaining preparedness for any emergency arising from stronger or repeated tremors.
Earlier, in August, two tremors of magnitude 3.4 struck Maharashtra's Palghar district within an hour, officials said.
According to PTI, no casualties or property damage has been reported, the officials said.
The first tremor was recorded at 10:04 pm on August 10, followed by another of the same intensity at 11 pm, according to the district information office.
District Disaster Management Cell chief Vivekanand Kadam, while briefing about the situation, said that the seismic activity occurred at a depth of 5 km in Jawhar taluka.
While the quick succession of tremors created anxiety among residents, no loss of life or structural damage occurred in the district, officials said.
Kadam also added, "Local authorities and disaster management teams were closely monitoring the situation," as per PTI.
Palghar, located in coastal Maharashtra, has experienced low-intensity tremors over the years. Authorities have appealed to people to stay calm and follow standard safety protocols.
