Maharashtra's power demand has increased by nearly 20 per cent, which the government says is a sign that industries and businesses are expanding in the state rather than moving elsewhere. The government also claimed that ongoing reforms in the power sector could make electricity tariffs in Maharashtra cheaper than those in Gujarat over the next two years.

'Maharashtra' preferred destination

Speaking in the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Wednesday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state's power demand has increased by nearly 20 per cent in the last two years, a growth that earlier would have taken almost a decade to achieve. Referring to the Opposition's claim that industries are moving out of Maharashtra, Fadnavis said the sharp rise in electricity consumption clearly indicates that businesses and industries are expanding within the state. He asserted that the narrative that Maharashtra is losing industries to other states is not supported by the data.

Power tariff to be cheaper than Gujarat

In his speech in the legislative council, the CM further mentioned that in two years, the power tariff would become cheaper than in Gujarat. "We have a multi-year tariff. The 2030 tariff has been finalised. In 2029-30, Maharashtra's power tariff would be Rs 7.43, which would be cheaper than any other state," Fadnavis stated.

MVA raises power issue

Congress leader Satej (alias) Bunty Patil raised the power issue in the legislative council and suggested that a meter should be installed on the feeder so that one can know how much power is actually consumed. Patil claimed that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should call a meeting of stakeholders to address the issue. The Congress leader claimed that the per-unit cost is not Rs 8 but Rs 13.87 in actuality. In states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, they are much lower. "Government is asking to invest in solar, but at the same time levies grid charges. This needs to be looked into to make power cheaper," Satej Patil added.
