MSRTC increases bus fares by 13.56 per cent, withdraws temporary 10 per cent seasonal charge

The Maharashtra State Transport Authority has approved a 13.56 per cent increase in fares proposed by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

At the same time, the corporation has withdrawn the 10 per cent temporary seasonal surcharge that was previously levied on ordinary bus services, providing some relief to passengers.

MSRTC said the fare revision was necessary because of a significant increase in operating expenses.

According to the corporation, the price adjustment was entirely necessary to protect the financial sustainability of the MSRTC and to continue providing safe, high-quality, and uninterrupted services to millions of passengers across the state. Operating daily under heavy financial strain due to rising expenses was becoming unviable, making the fare hike essential to keep the fleet moving smoothly.

The corporation cited several factors, including:

Rising diesel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region.
Higher salaries and allowances for transport employees.
Increased costs of vehicle spare parts.
Higher tyre prices.
Rising maintenance expenses.

According to the corporation, the revised fares are aimed at ensuring the financial sustainability of Maharashtra's state-run bus service.

Focus on reliable public transport

MSRTC said the additional revenue would help maintain safe, reliable and uninterrupted transport services for millions of passengers across the state.

Officials added that strengthening the corporation's finances would support better maintenance standards and improve the overall quality of public transport.

Sarnaik assures minimal impact

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the fare revision was planned carefully to minimise the financial burden on passengers.

He said the increase was necessary to strengthen MSRTC's financial position and appealed to commuters to continue supporting the state's public transport system.
