A 29-year-old man was arrested on Monday morning after allegedly ramming his speeding Mercedes into two police officers at a checkpoint on Mumbai's Marine Drive, leaving them seriously injured before fleeing the spot, news agency IANS reported, quoting officials.

The accused, identified as Nihal Solanki, a resident of Panchavati in Nashik, was arrested from Nalasopara following a search operation launched by Marine Drive Police.

According to officials, the incident took place late on Sunday night when two police personnel were conducting vehicle checks at a checkpoint on Marine Drive.

The injured officers, identified as Constable Krishnakant Mishra and Rathod, are attached to Marine Drive Police Station. The police said the duo sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment in the ICU of Bombay Hospital.

The police further informed that the officers had attempted to stop Solanki's luxury car at the checkpoint. However, instead of slowing down, he allegedly accelerated the vehicle and knocked down the two officers before fleeing the scene.

After receiving information about the incident, police teams rushed to the spot and shifted the injured officers to hospital for treatment.

Speeding bike jumps signal, kills 3 at Marine Drive

In a similar incident last month, three people were killed during the early hours after a speeding motorcycle hit a pedestrian at Marine Drive in South Mumbai.

The horrific accident occurred at 5.40 am at the Parsi Gymkhana junction signal on NS Road when the pedestrian was crossing the road.

The motorcycle was driven recklessly by its rider, who had a woman as a pillion passenger. The rider ignored the signal and rammed into the pedestrian.

According to officials, some passersby rushed the three injured persons, the motorcyclist (19), the woman passenger (mid-30s), and the pedestrian (66) to GT Hospital, where all of them were declared dead.

According to the police, the motorcyclist may have been unable to control the speed, causing him to ram into the pedestrian.
