Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding relief for residents of old Mumbai buildings before monsoon.
Aaditya Thackeray, in his letter, stated that it was a reminder to the state government for the redevelopment of cess and non-cess buildings in Mumbai and the problems faced by tenants.
In his letter, Aaditya Thackeray highlighted the long-pending issue of redevelopment of old cess buildings operating under the pagdi system. He stated that redevelopment provisions under Rules 79-A(1)(a) and 79-A(1)(b) were introduced during the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
However, he noted that the matter has remained pending in court for the last two years, affecting nearly 14,000 buildings and lakhs of residents across Mumbai.
Aaditya Thackeray posted the letter on his X account and said he was reminding the Chief Minister about the need to urgently release funds for repairs and redevelopment work related to cess and non-cess buildings.
"Urging that funds be made immediately available before the upcoming monsoon season for the repair and maintenance of these buildings under the Chief Minister's special powers," Aaditya wrote on X.
He expressed hope that both the state and central governments would work together to provide justice and protection to tenants living in ageing structures across Mumbai.
In his letter, Aaditya Thackeray urged the Maharashtra government to take immediate steps on four major demands:
- Conduct a special drive to properly register all tenants
- Protect tenants from alleged harassment and eviction by landlords
- Provide urgent repair and maintenance funds before the monsoon for cess and non-cess buildings requiring structural repairs
- Personally intervene in the pending court matter to ensure justice for affected residents
He also pointed out that similar issues faced by tenants in cess buildings in south Mumbai were also affecting residents of non-cess buildings in suburban areas.
Aaditya Thackeray requested that emergency financial assistance be provided through the Chief Minister's special powers before the arrival of the monsoon season.
According to him, many old and damaged buildings urgently require repairs and maintenance to ensure the safety of residents during heavy rains.
