The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday evening said that the water supply in South Mumbai will fully resume from May 9 after it successfully completed pipeline repairs following 44 hours of marathon work, officials said.

The repair works of a damaged 1650mm diameter main water pipeline on Dr E Moses Road was completed on Friday, they said.

The civic officials said the repaired pipeline has become fully operational and evening water supply on Friday has been restored completely.

Water supply in the affected areas of the D, E and G South wards is expected to return to normal from Saturday, 9 May 2026.

Repair work began on May 6

The major leakage in the pipeline was detected on the evening of May 6, 2026.

After identifying a crack in the 1650mm diameter water pipeline, the BMC immediately shut off the water supply and began emergency repair work at around 10 pm on Wednesday.

Officials said the damaged pipeline was located nearly 15 feet underground, making the repair operation extremely difficult.

Engineers first carried out large-scale excavation work to expose the pipeline. A manhole was then created to drain the accumulated water inside the pipeline.

During inspection, severe damage was found around 12 feet away from the manhole area.

Repair teams used seven steel plates measuring approximately 5 feet by 2.5 feet and carried out patch welding work on the mild steel pipeline.

The repair work was completed in a narrow underground space around 15 feet deep and 12 feet long.

Advanced equipment and skilled workforce

The BMC said advanced machinery, repair materials and trained workers were deployed to complete the operation within a short period, an official statement said.

Around 40 employees, including engineers and technical staff, worked continuously at the site to restore the pipeline.

The work was carried out under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Joshi and Water Engineer Dilip Patil, the Mumbai civic body said.

Civic chief praises staff

BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide praised the engineers and civic workers for completing the repair work ahead of schedule despite challenging conditions, the statement said.

It said that normal water supply operations are now being restored gradually across the affected areas.
