Mumbai: Borivali-Virar rail expansion reaches 30 per cent progress, completion targeted by 2029

The Borivali-Virar 5th and 6th Lines Project has achieved 30 per cent physical progress, with the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) targeting completion of the major capacity augmentation project by 2029.

The project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-IIIA (MUTP-IIIA) on the Western Railway suburban corridor has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 2,184 crore.

The officials, while briefing about the ongoing progress, said that significant progress has been made in land acquisition and statutory clearances for the project.

They also added that possession of 11.929 hectares of salt pan land at Umelman in Vasai has been obtained, while acquisition and statutory processes for the remaining land are under way. Forest and mangrove clearances have also been obtained.

FOB and platform work gathers pace

Civil construction has progressed at several locations along the corridor. Relocation of railway structures at Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Naigaon, Nallasopara and Vasai Road has either been completed or reached advanced stages, as per the officials.

Works related to the construction and modification of foot overbridges (FOBs) and platforms at Dahisar, Naigaon and Nallasopara are also in progress.

Construction of three major bridges, three minor bridges and one road overbridge (ROB), along with associated earthwork, is currently under way.

Work on two key structures, Bridge Nos. 73 and 75, is progressing, with well-done foundation and fabrication works under way.

MRVC further said that around 1.30 lakh cubic metres of earthwork have been completed along the Bridge No. 75-Naigaon and Panju Island stretches. Under another earthwork package, approximately 70,000 cubic metres of earthwork has also been completed."

Borivali-Virar corridor aims at boosting rail capacity

The Borivali-Virar corridor is a heavily utilised section of the Western Railway suburban network. The addition of the fifth and sixth lines is aimed at increasing rail capacity and improving the segregation of suburban and other train services.

Sunil G. Udasi, Chief Manager, Corporate Coordination, MRVC, said, "The additional 5th and 6th lines between Borivali and Virar will provide much-needed additional rail capacity on this heavily utilised corridor and facilitate better segregation of suburban and other train services."

MRVC said it is progressing the project in coordination with Western Railway and other concerned authorities. At the same time, the corporation is pursuing pending land acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) and statutory processes to facilitate timely completion of the project.
