A viral Instagram post highlighting the poor condition of a skate park beneath the Hindmata flyover in Dadar East prompted swift action from Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, who visited the site on Saturday and directed officials to undertake immediate cleaning and repair work.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the issue was brought to public attention by local resident Harsh Choubey, who shared videos and photographs on Instagram showing dust, garbage and deteriorating conditions at the skate park located near Gold Cinema under the Hindmata flyover.
The post quickly gained traction on social media, following which Tawde personally visited the facility along with civic officials to assess the situation.
During the inspection, she expressed dissatisfaction over the condition of the recreational facility and directed officials to immediately clean the premises and undertake necessary maintenance work.
The BMC said sanitation workers launched a clean-up drive on a war footing, removing accumulated waste, sweeping the premises, and washing the area to restore the park.
The mayor also instructed officials to carry out repair and painting work, ensure regular maintenance, protect the facility from rainwater damage, improve lighting arrangements, and deploy security personnel at the site.
Tawde later interacted with Choubey at the skate park and appreciated his efforts in drawing attention to the issue through social media. She said civic authorities would continue to take note of citizen complaints and suggestions and act on them promptly.
As part of efforts to beautify the facility, the mayor and Choubey planted ornamental saplings, including zebra plants and spider lilies, within the park premises.
According to the BMC, the skate park was developed by the F-South Ward between December 5, 2022, and March 4, 2023, over an area of 187 square metres as part of a project to beautify the space beneath the Hindmata flyover.
Apart from skating facilities, the park also features a Mallakhamb sculpture, a musical installation known as Bell Layer, X-and-O game installations, babble drums, and a snakes-and-ladders play area for children.
