The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will construct seven Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) along the Mumbai Metro Line 9 corridor between Dahisar East and Mira-Bhayandar to improve commuter safety and accessibility.
The bridges will be developed under MMRDA's Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) initiative, which focuses on providing seamless connectivity between metro stations and surrounding transport networks.
Metro Line 9 spans approximately 11 kilometres and includes eight stations connecting Dahisar East with Mira-Bhayandar.
The seven FOBs will be built across some of the busiest stretches of the Western Express Highway and Mira-Bhayandar Road, where heavy traffic and wide roads often make pedestrian movement difficult.
The proposed locations include:
- Dahisar Toll Naka - 145 metres
- Miragaon - 87 metres
- Mira-Bhayandar Road
- Kashigaon - 92 metres
- Shivar Garden - 80 metres
- Maxus Mall - 83 metres
- Veg Sagar Hotel - 88 metres
- Sai Baba Nagar - 80 metres
According to MMRDA, all seven bridges will be three metres wide and equipped with modern commuter-friendly facilities, including staircases, lifts for universal accessibility and CCTV surveillance systems.
The authority said the bridges are designed to ensure safe, grade-separated pedestrian crossings across high-traffic roads and reduce dependence on signal-controlled crossings.
Officials said the project will provide several benefits, including safer pedestrian movement across major roads, improved access to Metro Line 9 stations, Better last-mile connectivity, reduced risk of road accidents, faster passenger dispersal during peak hours, improved integration between metro services and other transport modes and potential increase in metro ridership.
The bridges are also expected to improve traffic flow by reducing pedestrian crossings at busy junctions.
MMRDA said the FOBs are being planned alongside the near-completion of Metro Line 9 civil works.
Phase I of Metro Line 9 was commissioned on April 7, 2026, and the authority aims to ensure that pedestrian infrastructure is ready before the full corridor becomes operational.
The contract for the project, valued at approximately Rs 82.09 crore, has been awarded to Speco Infrastructure JV and PRS Infraprojects LLP.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that expanding metro infrastructure must be accompanied by safe and convenient access systems.
He noted that Maharashtra is adding nearly 50 kilometres of metro lines every year and stressed the need for an integrated transport ecosystem that allows commuters to travel seamlessly across Mumbai.
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde said the success of public transport depends on how easily citizens can access it. He described the FOB project as an important step towards creating a safer and more commuter-friendly transport network.
MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee said the bridges have been carefully planned to improve station accessibility, pedestrian movement and commuter convenience while strengthening the region's public transport infrastructure.
