The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Pune warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds over the next few hours.
A weather bulletin stated that isolated areas across the three districts are likely to experience change in weather conditions, with wind speeds expected to reach 30 to 40 kmph.
According to the forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected at isolated places across Mumbai and neighbouring districts.
"Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated place very likely," the alert stated.
According to the weather department, while the minimum temperature in Mumbai is expected to settle around 27 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature is likely to remain around 34 degrees Celsius during the day.
As per IMD, partly cloudy conditions are likely to continue till Tuesday with chances of moderation on both days.
While the pre-monsoon showers may bring temporary relief from the heat, humidity levels are expected to stay elevated at around 62 per cent, contributing to a muggy atmosphere across the city.
With the city expected to receive pre-monsoon showers on Monday and Tuesday, the air quality across the suburbs and town also remained in the "good" category on Monday.
Data from the Central Pollution Control Board's Sameer App showed the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) at 50, indicating minimal impact on public health.
A similar alert was issued for some parts of Maharashtra including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Parbhani, Beed, Nanded, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Wardha, Amravati, Gadchiroli and Hingoli districts.
An orange alert was issued for several district of Maharashtra including Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Chandrapur and Gondia.
The alert said, "Thunderstorm with accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) at isolated places was very likely."
Residents have been advised to remain cautious during outdoor activities and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electrical installations during lightning activity.
