Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Monday called for the imposition of President's Rule in West Bengal, alleging a breakdown of law and order following reported attacks on two senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, reported the PTI.
In an editorial titled âImpose President's Rule in Bengal' published in the party mouthpiece Saamana, the Shiv Sena (UBT) criticised the BJP-led government in the state and claimed the incidents had damaged not only West Bengal's image but also that of the country.
The editorial referred to separate incidents involving TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee.
According to reports, Abhishek Banerjee, the MP from Diamond Harbour, was allegedly pelted with stones and eggs by a crowd in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district, on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Kalyan Banerjee claimed he suffered head injuries after being mobbed outside a police station in Hooghly district on Sunday.
According to the PTI, the Shiv Sena (UBT) alleged that the West Bengal government had failed to take action against those responsible for the incidents and accused it of creating an atmosphere where opposition leaders were being targeted.
The editorial further claimed that the silence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Governor N. Ravi on the incidents raised serious questions about the state government's response.
The party argued that if similar incidents had occurred under a previous government, there would have been demands for central intervention. It maintained that the current situation warranted the imposition of President's Rule, as per the PTI.
The editorial also accused the BJP of attempting to weaken the TMC and alleged that political power was being used to settle scores rather than address public concerns.
The Saamana editorial additionally questioned the fairness of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, alleging that the BJP benefited from extensive deployment of central forces and support from central agencies during the polling process, the news agency reported.
It claimed that the electoral outcome was influenced by factors beyond the normal democratic process, though no evidence was provided to support these allegations.
The remarks are the latest in an ongoing political war of words between opposition parties and the BJP following the change of government in West Bengal.
The controversy surrounding the alleged attacks on TMC leaders is expected to intensify political debate over law and order and the treatment of opposition parties in the state.
