The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday said Mumbai recorded 142 incidents of trees and branches falling over the past 24 hours as strong winds gusting between 72 and 75 kilometre per hour (kmph) swept across the city amid heavy monsoon showers.
The civic body said around 150 to 170 mm of rainfall was recorded across different parts of Mumbai during the 24-hour period ending 5 pm on Sunday. Despite the intense rainfall and a high tide of 4.19 metres recorded at 3.22 pm, normal life remained largely unaffected, with no reports of waterlogging in the city or suburbs, the civic body claimed.
According to the BMC, Mumbai City recorded 153 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period, while the eastern suburbs received 121 mm, and the western suburbs recorded an average of 93 mm.
Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide directed all the civic departments to remain on high alert on Monday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall over the city. Senior officials monitored the situation from the BMC's Emergency Operations Centre and coordinated response measures throughout the day.
The civic body said nearly 10,000 officers and employees remained deployed across Mumbai over the weekend to respond to emergencies and ensure uninterrupted civic services. Assistant municipal commissioners, engineers, health workers, pump operators, and emergency response teams have been stationed across the city to deal with any rain-related incidents.
The BMC's Emergency Management Department received 276 complaints related to fallen trees and branches during the day, of which 142 were confirmed incidents. Civic workers promptly cleared fallen trees and branches, giving priority to restoring traffic movement.
Two fatalities were reported in separate tree-fall incidents. A 63-year-old man, Yunus Kundawala, died after a tree branch fell on a shop near Gomes Town in Kurla Kamani on Sunday. In another incident, an 18-year-old youth died after a tree collapsed in Unit 13 of Aarey Colony on Saturday around 3 pm.
Separately, a vacant three-storey under-construction structure collapsed on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg near Worli Dairy. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
As part of its pre-monsoon preparedness, the BMC said it surveyed 1,62,676 trees, pruned over 1.03 lakh trees, and removed 648 dangerous trees across Mumbai before the onset of the monsoon.
