Central Railway's Mumbai Division has launched a special drive to inspect and improve drinking water facilities across its stations, colonies and workplaces following the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on sanitation facilities and passenger amenities at non-suburban railway stations, an official statement said.
The drive was carried out in compliance with Railway Board directions and covered drinking water sources, filtration plants, underground and overhead tanks, PVC tanks, water booths, taps and dispensing points.
According to Central Railway, a total of 2,967 locations were covered during the special drive.
During the inspections, 410 deficiencies were recorded, of which 365 have been rectified. The remaining 45 are under work, Central Railway said.
The division has 2,913 water tanks across platforms, station premises, colonies and office premises. Of these, 1,753 tanks were cleaned between August 20 and September 22.
Tight covers and mesh on vents and overflows were provided at 1,716 locations as part of the drive.
Central Railway said 349 water samples were subjected to physical, chemical and bacteriological testing.
The railway said none of the samples tested positive for bacteriological contamination and E. coli was not detected in any sample.
The division has also placed 134 locations under daily residual free chlorine monitoring to keep track of water quality.
In addition, 26 leakages or defective pipelines were rectified, while 29 hand pump and borewell sources were checked for contamination and safety.
Central Railway said the complete water piping systems were checked for leakages at CSMT, Kalyan, Bhiwandi Road and Lonavla.
Water coolers were also inspected and cleaned by the Electrical Department. Missing taps were provided, leaking taps were replaced and accumulated silt was removed.
E. coli testing kits have also been provided at all concerned Inspector of Works (IOW) offices.
Central Railway said all 349 samples tested during the current drive were negative for bacteriological contamination and that E. coli was not detected at any location.
The Central Railway's Mumbai Division said it remains committed to providing safe, hygienic and potable drinking water and ensuring compliance with the Uniform Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Protocol at all stations.
