With Mumbai witnessing its first red alert this monsoon on Saturday, several areas experienced torrential downpour, and rain-related mishaps.

A major cave-in at an excavation site on LBS Marg swallowed a stationary temp truck and trees on Saturday afternoon. Fortunately, there were no casualties. According to officials, a nearly-100-by-100-foot stretch gave way around 2.40 pm opposite Asian Paints in Bhandup West.

Several parts of Mumbai received over 150 mm of rainfall during the said 24 hours. Vikhroli West recorded the highest level at 246.6 mm between 8 am and 6 pm.

In Govandi, a ground+1 house collapsed, and one man and woman were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital with minor bruises. No major injury was reported. Eight other incidents of house/wall collapses were reported across the city and its suburbs on Saturday.

A tree uprooted and crashed onto the Minatai Flower Market.

Brace for red alert today as well

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Sunday as well, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall.

In view of this, the BMC has urged citizens to avoid venturing outdoors unless absolutely necessary. The civic body has also cautioned citizens to avoid walking through waterlogged roads or near open drains, as well as advised to stay away from electric poles, snapped power lines, and dangerous trees. Any emergency or hazardous situation can be reported to the BMC Disaster Management Cell or the concerned ward office.

Oppn slams Satam for ‘insensitivity'

MNS Chief Raj Thackeray on Saturday sought action against Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam after a viral video showed the latter smiling while speaking about rain-related deaths.

In the video, Satam is seen with NCP (SP) MLA Jayant Patil on the Vidhan Bhavan steps, saying, "Yesterday, it was because of a tree, today it is a manhole."

An 11-year-old boy was killed due to a tree falling on a school bus, and a 60-year-old man died after falling into an uncovered manhole in the city earlier this week.

In a post on Facebook addressing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Thackeray said people across the country claim the BJP leadership at the Centre has become arrogant because of power. "But has this attitude now spread to our state as well? And are you allowing it to spread?" he asked.
