A 24-year-old visually impaired law student from Delhi has alleged that an acquaintance attempted to coerce him into an organ donation during a stopover in Mumbai, after taking him to a hospital in Andheri.

Simon Johnson, who is completely blind and pursuing an LLB in Delhi, was travelling to Thiruvananthapuram for a computer programming course with a man who had earlier worked as his scribe. The two left Delhi on Friday and reached Vasai on Saturday afternoon.

Hospital visit triggers alarm

Johnson alleged that his companion began feigning illness upon arrival and took him allegedly to a hospital in Andheri, where he was made to wait in the lobby. He said he could not understand the conversation between his companion and others at the hospital, as it was in Marathi, but suspected they were discussing taking his kidney. "My phone was charging, so I could not call the police immediately. After five minutes, I was called into a room where they checked my blood pressure and medical records, and I believe even an injection was used. I was told it was because of high blood pressure. I protested, but they didn't listen to the me, and I couldn't understand what they were saying in Hindi," said Johnson.

Complainant approaches cops, receives shelter

Johnson said he contacted emergency services on 112 and eventually reached Shivaji Park police station, whose officers dropped him off at Jogeshwari's MN Banajee Industrial Home for the Blind. "I have tried to file an FIR, but no one has helped me understand what is happening yet," said Johnson.

Earlier request for a kidney donation

Johnson said the same acquaintance had approached him six months earlier, asking for a kidney donation for his mother. He said he had refused.

Abandoned near Dadar stn

Johnson said he became alarmed during the hospital visit and tried to leave. He added that after he managed to get his phone back, his acquaintance dropped him at Dadar railway station, saying he would return in five minutes, but he did not come back. "I started protesting and said that I would call the authorities, but my phone was with him. I quickly apologised, got my phone back, and my scribe dropped me at Dadar railway station. He said he would return in five minutes, but never did," he added.

Police response

According to a letter from Shivaji Park police station, Johnson has been provided shelter at a home for the blind in Jogeshwari. Police said he has yet to file a formal complaint based on his allegations.
