Mumbai is bracing for another spell of heavy to very heavy rain, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the city every day till Saturday. Yet, despite the wet week ahead, June has ended with a significant rainfall deficit, highlighting an erratic start to this year's southwest monsoon.
According to IMD data, Colaba recorded 441 mm of rainfall in June, about 18 per cent below normal, while Santacruz logged 416.4 mm, a deficit of around 22 per cent.

The IMD's monthly outlook indicates below-normal rainfall across the region in July, with precipitation expected to remain below 94 per cent of the Long Period Average (based on the 1971-2020 climatological average).
Despite several intense spells of rain, meteorologists say rainfall has been unevenly distributed through June, leaving the month's rainfall below normal.
