The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and an orange alert for Thane, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong, gusty winds over the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD's weather bulletin issued at 8 am, Mumbai is expected to witness a generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rainfall at a few places across the city and suburbs. The department has also warned of isolated spells of very heavy rainfall, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph.
For Thane, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at a few places, along with strong winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph.
The high tide is expected at 9 am (3.35 metres) and again at 7.53 pm (2.94 metres). The low tide is scheduled for 3 pm (2.57 metres), followed by another low tide at 2.21 am on July 25 (1.48 metres).
Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded moderate rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on July 24. The Island City received an average rainfall of 31.94 mm, while the Eastern Suburbs recorded 33.97 mm and the Western Suburbs 32.16 mm.
The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas and along the coast, as heavy rainfall and strong winds may lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility.
Mumbai's water reserves witnessed a significant boost following heavy rainfall across the catchment areas, with the combined stock in the seven lakes supplying drinking water to the city rising to 77.62 per cent of total live storage capacity.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Hydraulic Engineer's Department, the reservoirs collectively held 11,23,443 million litres (ML) of water as of 6 am on Friday, July 24, against their total live storage capacity of 14,47,363 ML.

The civic body said the reservoir stock increased by 7.88 percentage points in the 24-hour period between 6 am on July 23 and 6 am on July 24, following widespread rainfall across the catchment areas.
The latest data shows that Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi lakes remain at 100 per cent capacity, while Tansa Lake has reached 98.77 per cent, meaning four of Mumbai's seven reservoirs have either overflowed or are virtually full this monsoon.
Modak Sagar began overflowing at 2.07 am on July 23, while Tansa Lake overflowed on July 22 at 8.51 am. Earlier this month, Vihar Lake overflowed at 9 pm on July 7, followed by Tulsi Lake at 11.43 pm on the same day.
