Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday inaugurated Phase 1 of the Dahisar River Rejuvenation and Beautification Project in Mumbai, calling the project an example for the nation.
Speaking at the event in Dahisar, the North Mumbai MP said that the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) model developed for the Dahisar River should become a role model for river-cleaning projects across India.
Piyush Goyal said that the efforts of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) alone would not be enough to maintain river cleanliness and urged citizens to actively participate by avoiding dumping waste into rivers.
He said the Dahisar River clean-up could become a successful public movement only when people stop throwing garbage into the water body.
The Union minister said that the next phase of the project should help develop the area into a tourism and recreation destination.
He also called for deepening of the river channel, removal of silt and revival of natural water springs. According to him, the project will also help reduce flooding problems during the monsoon season.
According to an official BMC statement, Under Phase 1 of the project, two fully automated sewage treatment plants based on advanced membrane bioreactor technology have been constructed along the Dahisar River.
One STP with a capacity of 1.5 MLD has been set up at Sukurwadi in Borivali East, while another 5 MLD plant has been established at Indiranagar in Dahisar West.
Officials said treated water from these plants can be reused for gardening, road cleaning, industrial purposes and other non-drinking uses, promoting sustainable water management.
The project aims to improve around 4.75 km of the river stretch and includes the construction of 4.4 km of sewer lines, interceptors to divert sewage flow, service roads and drainage infrastructure, the statement said.
The officials said the initiative will significantly reduce sewage flowing into the river and help improve environmental quality and public health in surrounding areas.
Mumbai's Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi, local MLA Manisha Chaudhari, MLA Prakash Surve and several civic officials attended the inauguration ceremony, the Mumbai civic body stated.
