Palghar rains: Ganesh Naik orders restoration after floods claim three lives

Palghar district in Maharashtra is slowly returning to normalcy after being battered by heavy rainfall between July 22 and July 24, which claimed three lives and caused extensive damage to roads and public infrastructure.

Significant damage was reported along key routes, including the Narpad-Chikhla coastal road and the Vadghar bridge.

District Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Zilla Parishad to immediately conduct comprehensive damage assessments and prioritise restoration work to restore normal traffic movement and daily life at the earliest.

He also instructed Palghar District Collector Indu Rani Jakhar and other officials to promptly provide essential amenities and support to citizens affected by the adverse weather conditions, according to an official release.

Naik inspected flood-affected areas across the district and directed officials to ensure an adequate supply of food, medicines and other essential items for residents evacuated to temporary shelters.

He further instructed the district administration to complete damage assessments on priority and expedite the required documentation so that financial compensation can be disbursed to affected families in accordance with government norms.

Officials said on Friday that 244 people had been rescued from various waterlogged locations across the district. The rescued included 124 people from Palghar town, 65 workers stranded at a factory in Talasari, and 25 people trapped at a farmhouse in Gundale.

Mercury to hover around 30 degrees Celsius as moderate rain continues

Mumbai is expected to witness a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain in the city and suburbs on Saturday, according to the latest weather forecast issued at 8 am.

The maximum temperature in Mumbai is likely to settle around 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 26 degrees Celsius, indicating warm and humid weather conditions amid continued monsoon activity across the city and suburbs.

The first high tide of the day is expected at 9.52 am, with waves reaching 3.53 metres, while the second high tide will occur at 9.13 pm with a height of 2.99 metres.

The low tide is scheduled for 4.03 pm at 2.43 metres, followed by another low tide at 3.21 am on July 26, when the sea level is expected to drop to 1.32 metres.
