A six-year-old boy died after accidentally coming into contact with a live electric wire in Srinagar locality of Thane city, Maharashtra, on Monday night, reported PTI.
According to the police, the child had stepped out of his house around 10 pm when he unintentionally touched a live wire. He suffered a severe electric shock and collapsed immediately.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The incident led to strong anger among local residents. On that same night, hundreds of people gathered outside the Srinagar police station and staged a protest for several hours. They demanded strict action against officials of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), alleging negligence in maintaining electrical safety in the area, as per the news agency reports.
Srinagar police station senior inspector Gulzarilal Fadtare said the police assured the crowd that appropriate action would be taken, after which the protest was called off peacefully.
Following the incident, the child's body was sent to a government hospital for postmortem examination. Police have registered a case of accidental death. Investigation is currently underway, official said.
Another minor, a nine-year-old girl died due to government negligence. She succumbed after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Bundi district of Rajasthan on Monday morning, officials said.
The incident took place early Monday morning in Alkodia village under Talera police station limits. The girl, a Class 3 student, had left her home around 6 am to go to the nearby fields, as she usually did. While she was outside, a group of stray dogs suddenly attacked her. She was severely injured in the assault.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajesh Tailor, the dogs mauled her body at multiple places and in some areas, flesh was badly damaged. Hearing her screams, family members rushed to the spot, but by then she had already suffered critical injuries.
She was immediately taken to the Community Health Centre in Talera, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police said a case of unnatural death has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. After a post-mortem conducted by a medical board, the body was handed over to the family.
The tragedy triggered concern at the political level. Lok Sabha Speaker and Kota-Bundi MP Om Birla visited the family in Alkodia village on Monday. He expressed condolences and handed over Rs 1 lakh as immediate compensation. He also announced an additional Rs 1 lakh aid through public funding and directed officials to provide further assistance, including benefits under government schemes such as the PM Awas Yojana.
He instructed district authorities to take urgent preventive measures to control stray dog attacks in the area.
