The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) with other Muslim outfits yesterday, said they were boycotting the Law Commission's effort for inputs for a Uniform Civil Code.

Feroze Mithiborwala, one of the founders of the Haji Ali for All movement slammed the law board saying, "Everybody has the freedom to practice their religion, yet, nobody has the freedom to discriminate citing religious laws. We want triple talaq, polygamy and practice of nikah halala abolished." Mithiborwala said the law board and other allied outfits do not have the right to say that nobody can interfere in their matters. "Personal laws of any religion, which discriminate, need to reform. Muslim women themselves have gone to court against triple talaq, so it is evident that the battle has moved within. Some of the clergy have made horrendous statements against women saying they are weaker, etc. They need to change or be confined to the dustbin of history."

Mithiborwala added that there is growing momentum within the community amongst its women and youth especially, to seek reform and that is why, "attempts are being made to make the community scared of the Uniform Civil Code. There should be an open debate in all religions about the code. We have to move towards gender justice and equality which should be the bedrock and core of all laws."
