Earth Hour is a global environmental movement organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). It encourages individuals, communities, businesses, and governments to switch off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbolic gesture of support for the planet, highlighting the need to combat climate change, nature loss, and promote sustainability
Participants turn off non-essential electric lights and appliances at home, offices, and public places. Iconic landmarks, monuments, and buildings across the world also switch off their lights, creating a powerful visual message. The event is not about saving electricity for that one hour alone, but about raising awareness and inspiring long-term behavioural change towards a greener future
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, on 31 March 2007, when more than 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses switched off their lights. It quickly grew into one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental movements. Today, it is observed in over 190 countries and territories, with millions of participants every year
In India, Earth Hour sees wide participation from governments, railways, municipalities, and citizens. In Mumbai, iconic landmarks such as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Gateway of India, and BMC Headquarters joined the movement. Central Railway switched off non-essential lights at CSMT during the hour to support the global cause
