Thane Zilla Parishad CEO Uday Choudhary found that the gram sevaks had not properly implemented the Employment Guarantee Scheme and Swachh Bharat programmes effectively, and hence action was taken against them, he said. He said since the last two months, the number of workers under the MNREGS was on a decline and the gram sevaks submitted reports that there was no demand for construction of toilets from the villagers.
During a tour of Sahapur and Murbad talukas, the CEO received complaints that the workers were not getting jobs under MNREGS and had to migrate to other places. Later, during enquiry, the gram sevaks were allegedly found responsible for ineffective implementation of the government programmes, the official said.
Of the 36 gram sevaks whose increments have been stopped, 18 are from Murbad, 10 from Bhiwandi and 8 from Sahapur, he said.
Following this action, the attendance of workers in the EGS works has gone up to 900 this month as against 450 last month in Murbad, and 1,100 as against 600 in Sahapur, he added.
