The Kandivali Police in Mumbai have arrested a man who allegedly posed as a police officer and duped a senior citizen into handing over his gold jewellery worth Rs 97,450, officials said.
The accused has been identified as Sajjad Garibshah Pathan alias Irani, while his associate is still on the run.
The complainant, Ramesh Bhika Vaghela, aged 64, a retired BMC employee residing at BMC Colony in Kandivali (West), stated in his statement to the police that the incident occurred on September 9, 2025, around 11:40 a.m.
Vaghela had stepped out of his residence to throw garbage and later visited a salon. After purchasing a lock from Kandivali station and while returning home, he was stopped near Kala Hanuman Temple bus stop, Mahatma Gandhi Road, by two men pretending to be CID officials, said an official.
The duo flashed a fake ID and told him they were checking for narcotics and jewellery. Acting out of fear, the senior citizen handed them his gold chain and rings, wrapping them in a handkerchief as instructed. The accused then swapped the cloth and returned it to him, but later, when he reached home, he discovered the jewellery missing and only his mobile phone inside, said the official.
Realising later that he had been duped. The victim reached out to the police. A case was registered under various sections of the BNS and a probe was launched, the official said.
The stolen ornaments included gold chain worth Rs 50,000, gold ring - Rs 15,450, gold ring Rs 32,000 of a total value of Rs 97,450, the official said.
Under the guidance and supervision of DCP Sandeep Jadhav (Zone 11), Senior Inspector Karan Sonkawade, and PSI Nitin Satam, the detection team scanned dozens of CCTV footage clips and finally traced and apprehended the accused recently. The search for his associate is underway, he said.
"We have successfully arrested Sajjad Garibshah Pathan, while efforts are on to trace and arrest his accomplice. Further investigation is underway," the police officer added.
