Extreme safety alert notification flashed across smartphone users in Mumbai
Citizens were left startled on Saturday morning after mobile phones began ringing and vibrating simultaneously across Mumbai, triggering confusion and momentary panic.
The sudden alert on the smartphones triggered panic and left people wondering what it was about. Smartphone users reported that their phones emitted a loud, unfamiliar alert tone accompanied by an emergency-style notification.
However, authorities have earlier issued a notification highlighting, "NDMA will test Cell Broadcast Alerts on 2 May 2026 in your area. On receiving the message on your mobile phone, no action is required. Please do not panic."
The message on the notification read, 'India launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message. - Government of India."
An alert notification by the Government of India came in multiple languages, with English being the primary. As per the screenshots shared by the citizens, the notifications were received in various regional languages, including Telugu, Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English.
The sudden and coordinated nature of the alert, coupled with its distinctive warning sound, led many to initially fear a real emergency situation.
Authorities confirmed that the alert was part of a nationwide trial of India's Cell Broadcast emergency warning system.
The initiative, rolled out by the Government of India, aims to establish a robust mechanism to instantly notify citizens during disasters such as earthquakes, floods, or other critical situations.
Officials emphasised that no action was required from the public, reiterating that the message was purely a test of the country's emergency communication infrastructure.
The Cell Broadcast system is designed to send real-time alerts to all compatible mobile devices within a specific geographic area, ensuring rapid dissemination of crucial information during emergencies.
While the test caused a brief alarm, authorities said such exercises are essential to strengthen preparedness and ensure that citizens can be promptly informed during real crises.
