Central Railway on Thursday reported a major environmental and financial milestone under its âMission - Zero Scrap Status', generating Rs 73.67 crore from scrap sales in April and May.
The initiative, implemented across all five divisions and workshops, aims to convert railway scrap into revenue-generating assets while promoting efficient resource utilisation and environmental conservation.
The campaign is also part of a broader drive leading up to World Environment Day on Friday, June 5.
According to Central Railway, scrap sale earnings stood at Rs 34.08 crore in April and Rs 39.59 crore in May, marking the highest-ever combined revenue for the April-May period.
The achievement was driven by systematic disposal of multiple categories of scrap and waste materials, including 5,926 metric tonnes of permanent-way scrap, 6,337 metric tonnes of ferrous scrap, 539 metric tonnes of non-ferrous scrap, 26,882 sleepers, along with rolling stock comprising three locomotives, eight coaches, and 29 wagons.
The Central Railway Stores Department carried out coordinated drives to identify and clear scrap from scattered and remote locations across divisions, significantly boosting sales performance.
Among the divisions, Pune emerged as the top performer with scrap sales worth Rs 15.65 crore, followed by Nagpur (Rs 11.77 crore), Parel Workshop (Rs 11.05 crore), Bhusaval (Rs 8.72 crore), Matunga Workshop (Rs 7.38 crore), Mumbai Division (Rs 7.33 crore), and Solapur (Rs 4.59 crore), along with contributions from other units.
Central Railway also repurposed a Rotatek printing machine that was still in working condition but not in use. Instead of being scrapped, it was transferred to Nashik Printing Press at a value of Rs 8.76 crore, in a bid to maximise asset value through reuse.
Officials said these initiatives reflect Central Railway's continued focus on the âZero Scrap Mission', aimed at financial prudence, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
Central Railway's Mumbai Division has recovered Rs 30.13 crore in penalties from 4.30 lakh cases of ticketless travel during April and May 2026, marking a significant increase compared with the same period last year.
According to Central Railway, ticket checking staff detected 4.30 lakh cases of ticketless travel during the first two months of the 2026-27 financial year. The division had recovered Rs 12.02 crore from 2.75 lakh cases during the corresponding period in 2025.
The latest figures show an increase of more than 150 per cent in earnings and over 56 per cent in the number of cases detected.
In May 2026 alone, railway authorities recovered Rs 14 crore in penalties from 2.02 lakh ticketless travellers.
In May 2025, the division had collected Rs 5.95 crore from 1.30 lakh cases. This represents a rise of more than 135 per cent in earnings and over 56 per cent in the number of offenders detected, according to an official statement.
