Maharashtra State Commission for Safai Karamcharis' Vice-Chairman Mukesh Sonu Sarwan has directed authorities to ensure the effective implementation of welfare schemes meant for sanitation workers in Mumbai.
He issued the instructions during a review meeting held at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters on Friday.
During the meeting, Sarwan reviewed various matters related to sanitation workers employed by the BMC.
He also met Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide to discuss welfare measures and pending issues concerning sanitation staff.
Senior civic officials present at the meeting included Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Ashwini Joshi, Deputy Commissioner Kishor Gandhi, Deputy Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Commissioner Shashank Bhore, along with other officials.
As part of the visit, Sarwan inspected a housing colony built for sanitation workers under the Ashray Yojana at Rajwadkar Marg, Panchsheel Nagar in the Colaba area.
Officials discussed several demands related to sanitation workers as well as the implementation of government resolutions issued by the Social Justice Department and Urban Development Department.
During the review, Sarwan examined the current status of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Shram Safalya Yojana. Under the scheme, sanitation workers who have completed more than 25 years of service may receive free residential flats on an ownership basis, subject to eligibility conditions.
He also reviewed compensation cases related to sanitation workers and manual scavengers who lost their lives or suffered permanent disability while working in hazardous drains and sewer lines.
During the discussion, special attention was also given to improving the working conditions and safety standards for sanitation workers employed by the civic body.
Officials stated that there was a need for timely safety equipment, regular health check-ups, insurance support and better living facilities for workers and their families.
The commission stressed that sanitation workers play an important role in maintaining public hygiene and deserve proper welfare support and dignity at the workplace.
Sarwan also asked officials to ensure that government welfare schemes reach eligible workers without delay and that pending cases are resolved in a transparent and time-bound manner.
Sarwan directed civic authorities to submit reports on pending hereditary employment cases, sanctioned posts, filled positions, and vacant posts related to sanitation workers in the BMC.
He further instructed officials to take necessary action for the proper implementation of welfare schemes aimed at the overall development and welfare of sanitation workers employed by the civic body.
