The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a yellow alert for several districts in Maharashtra's Vidarbha, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and strong gusty winds.
The weather department also issued an orange alert for Amravati district.
The alert stated, "Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 50-60 kmph) at one or two places."
According to a weather bulletin, several district including Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Akola, Yavatmal, Bhuldana and Washim were under a yellow alert.
The alert stated that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph were very likely to occur at one or two places.
The residents have been advised to remain cautious, avoid open areas during thunderstorms, and take necessary precautions against lightning strikes and strong winds.
The IMD bulletin stated that the scattered rainfall of moderate intensity was recorded across parts of Vidarbha as weather systems over central India continued to influence weather conditions over the region, according to the latest meteorological observations.
It said an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over east Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. A trough associated with the system stretches southwards to northeast Tamil Nadu across Vidarbha, Telangana and Rayalaseema, enhancing moisture flow and supporting rainfall activity.
Another trough extends from central Pakistan to the West Bengal coast, passing through northeast Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, adjoining Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. These weather systems are contributing to unstable atmospheric conditions across parts of central and eastern India.
Meteorologists said conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into additional parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Bay of Bengal around June 4.
Several areas in Vidarbha received light to moderate rainfall during the past 24 hours. The highest rainfall amounts recorded were:
- Akot (Akola district) - 2 cm
- Dharni (Amravati district) - 1 cm
- Amravati - 1 cm
- Anjangaon - 1 cm
- Chandur Railway - 1 cm
- Daryapur - 1 cm
- Telhara (Akola district) - 1 cm
- Washim - 1 cm
There was no significant change in maximum temperatures across Vidarbha, with readings remaining close to seasonal averages. Minimum temperatures also showed little variation and remained below normal in several places.
Brahmapuri recorded the highest maximum temperature in the region at 43.3 degrees Celsius, while Washim reported the lowest minimum temperature at 21.0 degrees Celsius.
