10 injured including police personnel as anti-encroachment operation sparks clashes (Pic/Sayyed Sameer Abedi)
Ten people, including four police personnel, were injured after protestors in Mumbai's Bandra East area hurled stones at the authorities for allegedly demolishing a religious site as the anti-encroachment drive continued on Wednesday, officials said.
According to the officials, the incident took place in the Garib Nagar area near Bandra Terminus, where authorities were conducting an anti-encroachment drive on railway property when the situation escalated.
At least ten persons were detained for allegedly pelting stones during the ongoing drive. The officials also added that police resorted to a mild lathi charge to control the unruly mob.
An official statement from the civic authority stated that according to the doctors from Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, a total of six people who sustained injuries were initially received at the facility, involving police personnel and civilians.
As per the information provided by the Chief Medical Officer of Bhabha Hospital, three police personnel and three protesters sustained injuries during the stone-pelting incident.
Those injured include police staff identified as Vipul Vijaykumar Kadam (39) and Manish Bhimrao Bachhaw (44), along with Vaibhav Gite (25), who is also listed among the injured.
Among the protesters injured were Fizan Anwaj Khan (22), A. Rashid Khan (17), and Ansar Ali Baig (49), who has been admitted and is reported to be in stable condition.
Separately, according to reports received from V.N. Desai Hospital, four police personnel were brought in with injuries. Those include Jitendra Kumar Satender (45), who has been admitted and is in stable condition; Navnath Anna Mudgul (45); Omkar Deepak Koli (39); and Chandrakant Dhamble (45), all of whom reportedly left against medical advice (DAMA).
The Western Railway on Tuesday, May 19, launched a massive anti-encroachment drive in the Garib Nagar slum area, clearing several of the 500 illegal huts adjacent to the eastern side of Bandra railway station, following the Bombay High Court's directions.
