A 43-year-old man was injured after being hit by a BEST bus while it was reversing in Mumbai's Bhandup West area on Wednesday morning, officials said.
The incident took place at around 8.30 am on July 8 at Kokan Nagar in Bhandup West, according to details received from the BEST control room.
Officials said the injured man was identified as Atul Anant Padave (43). The accident involved bus number 4047 operating on route number A-425/32 from the Oshiwara depot.
According to preliminary information, the bus was taking a right turn towards Kokan Nagar when it was unable to negotiate the turn properly. The driver then reversed the vehicle, during which the rear portion of the bus came in contact with the pedestrian.
Padave got trapped between a large tree planter and the rear portion of the bus. Members of the public gathered at the spot and pushed the bus in an attempt to rescue him. During this process, the bus moved forward, and the driver was unable to maintain control of the vehicle.
The bus then collided with two parked motorcycles and an autorickshaw in the parking area, officials said.
The pedestrian sustained blunt injuries to both thighs, resulting in bleeding. The bus conductor immediately shifted him to M. T. Agrawal Hospital in Mulund for medical treatment.
A special bus inspector and officials concerned were deployed at the accident site to handle the matter. The process of registering the incident was underway at Bhandup Police Station.
Further details regarding Padave's health condition are awaited. Authorities are also expected to examine the sequence of events that led to the accident, including safety measures followed during the movement of the bus.
The latest incident has once again brought attention to road safety concerns in Mumbai amid a series of accidents involving BEST buses.
With thousands of people depending on public transport every day, such incidents have raised questions about passenger safety, driver training, monitoring systems and preventive measures.
Concerns have also grown among pedestrians and commuters following repeated accidents involving public transport vehicles across the city.
In June, a 28-year-old man was killed and six others were injured, one of them critically, after a BEST bus operating on Route 463/31 crashed into a car and a two-wheeler near Veer Kotwal Garden, close to Plaza Cinema in Dadar West.
The accident was reported at around 10.45 am. Seven injured people were rushed to Sion Hospital, where one person was declared dead on arrival.
According to hospital officials, the deceased was identified as Niayz Ahemed, who was riding an electric scooter.
Another two-wheeler rider, Vrishabh Gupta (22), was admitted in critical condition following the accident.
The other injured people in the Dadar accident were identified as pedestrian Amit Mhatre (41), BEST inspectors Mahesh Doiphode (50) and Satish Waghambare (48), bus conductor Rajendra Pelekar (57), and driver Vikas Padare (42).
Officials said Padare was taken into custody after receiving medical treatment.
