A chain collision involving a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus and multiple vehicles occurred near Rajiv Gandhi College on Mumbai's Versova Link Road on Thursday.
According to preliminary information by officials, the incident took place around 8.15 am when the bus, operating on Route 200 and belonging to Oshiwara (PMI) Depot, was plying towards Vesave in Andheri from Wadala Depot .
While passing by the stretch near Rajiv Gandhi College in the UP direction, the bus came into contact with a two-wheeler, an autorickshaw, and a four-wheeler, resulting in a chain collision involving all four vehicles.
Authorities confirmed that no passengers or individuals sustained any injury in the accident. However, BEST said the bus driver is "not in a proper state of mind" following the accident and has not yet provided a statement regarding the cause of the collision.
Traffic movement on the Versova-Andheri stretch was briefly affected, but later normalised with the help of local police and transport authorities.
Further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the accident. BEST officials are likely to conduct an internal review once the driver's statement is recorded and preliminary findings are compiled.
Last week, a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus conductor was crushed to death in a chain collision involving four buses on SV Road in Andheri West in Mumbai. The incident occurred in the afternoon on May 14 near Rajkumar Shop at Amboli Naka. According to preliminary information, a large tree fell on the roadway, causing traffic disruption.
BEST Committee member Sunil Ganachayra, who visited the site, said, "The third bus tried to move and erroneously sped up, leading to the incident. The conductor of the first bus, who went back to see what was wrong, was hit by the moving bus."
Another BEST official, on condition of anonymity, said that the conductor was crossing the road when he came under the bus.
According to the incident report, while three BEST buses were stationary, a PMI electric bus operating on Route 251, coming from Andheri West towards Versova, rammed into the rear of the queued vehicles. During the impact, the conductor of one bus (Route 266/32) was caught between the third bus and the PMI bus while crossing in front of the vehicle. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared brought dead upon admission, the report mentioned.
BEST has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the causes and circumstances of the accident. The matter is under verification and detailed investigation. Officials said the driver of the PMI bus allegedly failed to notice the conductor crossing in front of the bus.
